Get checked this May – join May Measurement Month

This month Hypertension Australia and the National Hypertension Taskforce are encouraging all Australians to have their blood pressure checked.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is the leading risk factor for death in Australia. There are often no symptoms of high blood pressure which is why it is referred to as the “silent killer”. The good news is, there are many things you can do to maintain a healthy blood pressure. The first step is knowing what your blood pressure is.

If you would like to learn more about your blood pressure, Hypertension Australia has a number of free resources that explain what high blood pressure is and how to manage it.

During the month of May there are many places around Australia that are offering free blood pressure checks as part of the May Measurement Month initiative. Click here to find an institution offering free blood pressure checks near you!

Don’t forget that you can always measure your blood pressure at pharmacies across the country and at your GP! The key thing is to get it checked.

High blood pressure is the single biggest risk factor for stroke – and it’s preventable. High blood pressure can damage the walls of blood vessels, and it can lead to heart problems. It can cause clots or plaques to break off and block an artery in the brain. High blood pressure is also the strongest risk factor for haemorrhagic stroke.

You can also get your blood pressure measured as part of Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check, which is organised by the Stroke Foundation.

Don’t let high blood pressure be your first sign of stroke – book in for your blood pressure check today and take a powerful step towards stroke prevention.
