Insights from the AHA Hypertension Conference: learning from the latest guidelines
Hypertension Australia member Eleanor Clapham, who recently attended the 2025 American Heart Association Hypertension conference in Baltimore with fellow members and colleagues, shares key insights on the newly released hypertension management guidelines and how cutting-edge research can be applied in practice.
“The American Heart Association (AHA) Hypertension conference, held in Baltimore from 4-7 September, was attended by several Hypertension Australia members despite the ~16,000km journey to the conference venue! As always, it was insightful and inspiring to see the new research coming from basic and clinical researchers from around the world. This meeting was particularly interesting as the new AHA guidelines on hypertension management were released the week prior and were hence a hot topic of discussion (link here). Conference attendees were given a valuable opportunity to have robust discussion, clear up confusions and provide feedback on the new practice-changing document. Additionally, for attendees from countries that are currently developing new guidelines, such as Australia and Sweden, this was a valuable opportunity to gain insights into the development and implementation process.
For me, a key takeaway was the collegial and energetic atmosphere in which researchers, clinicians and industry alike united on the shared goal of improving hypertension outcomes. It was inspiring to be part of conversations in which cutting edge research findings were discussed in the context of implementation by those who are working ‘on the ground’ in hypertension management. This reinforced that collaboration across research, clinical and industry disciplines will continue to be essential to ensure that the innovative outputs yielded through the hard work of our research sector are utilized in practice to support clinicians and patients, and ultimately improve hypertension outcomes.”
